In an ongoing initiative to mitigate basement backups and sewer overflows, MSD Project Clear is in the process of building a 6.8-mile tunnel, situated about 200 feet below ground in South St. Louis County. This tunnel, known as the Lower Meramec Tunnel Phase 2, spans from Old Towne Fenton to Baumgartner Road. Its purpose is to transport wastewater, currently treated at the Fenton Wastewater Treatment Plant, to the Lower Meramec Wastewater Treatment Plant. This strategic relocation enables MSD to eliminate a flood-prone facility, thereby enhancing water quality in the Meramec River.
